Mrs. Thue is Reading: The White Giraffe

The last book I grabbed from my daughter's bookshelf at home was a great one so I decided to see what else she had that was waiting to be read.

Last year when we visited the super cool Minneapolis bookstore, Wild Rumpus, her grandma let her choose any book. The book she chose was Lauren St. John's, The White Giraffe.

I looked on my shelf in the library and I have the first three books in the Animal Healer Series. There are four books in the series.

When Martine went to sleep on the night of her eleventh birthday her father's last words to her were, "You have to trust, Martine. Everything happens for a reason." She woke up from a dream to her worst nightmare. Her room was filling with smoke, her house was on fire. She escaped, but her parents did not. She soon learns that she will be sent to an African wildlife reserve to live with a grandmother she did not know existed. When she arrives she is met with many secrets about her family and myths about a white giraffe. What is real and what is her imagination? Who can she trust? Does she have the courage to survive her new adventure?

This series is a higher level reading series that I am looking forward to recommending to both my girls and boys in fifth grade and some fourth grade students. It is a great fit for an animal lover that enjoys adventure.

Mrs. Thue is reading: Shark Wars

It is my goal to read some of the new books in the library so that I can help my students find "good fit" books that will hook them on reading. I recently ordered the first two books in the Shark Wars series by: E.J. Altbacker. These books have been out since 2011 but our library does not have the series.

My daughter had the first book in the series on her bookshelf at home so I decided to read it and see if they would be a good fit for our library.

The series is set in the Big Blue. Since the beginning of time the Big Blue has been ruled by Shivers of Sharks. Until now, the Sharks have kept peace among all the sea life. Food sources are becoming scarce in the world's oceans and a battle has begun to find hunting ground. A young reef shark named Gray is exiled from his calm and peaceful home and forced into the deep waters of the Big Blue. As he tries to stay safe he discovers the truth about himself and battles to bring peace and order to the oceans once again.

This is a perfect series for a student that is interested in sharks. It introduces them to many different species and has an interesting story that will hook them from the beginning. My daughter and I are huge fans of the Discovery Network's Shark Week so I would say this is not a series for just boys. However, I know a few boys that would love to read these books. I look forward to getting the first two books in the series on the shelves in the library.

New Arrivals: September 2013

The kids started the school year with a few requests. It is my goal to put in at least one order per month. I try to get the books on the kids Wish List.

Go Kart Rush: by Jake Maddox

Speed Receiver: by Jake Maddox
A favorite author for boys grades 3-5 is Jake Maddox. We added to this series last year and the boys read through them quickly. Two more titles will be hitting the shelves this week. There is already a hold list for both books so I guess they won't see the shelves anytime soon.

A Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle: by Christopher Healy
The sequel to Christopher Healy's book The Hero's Guide to Saving the Kingdom. The second book featuring the Prince Charming's from popular fairy tales have to save the day again in this medieval times comedy.

Monster Games: Step into Reading Step 1 by: Melissa Lagonegro
My first graders love the Step into Reading Series books. I am excited to add this title to our collection from the movie Monsters University.

The Silver Door: by Emily Rodda
The second book in Emily Rodda's Golden Door Series. Rye made it through the first door, will he be able to make it through the second door before it is too late?

It's Halloween, I'm Turning Green: by Dan Gutman
In this Weird School Special A.J and his friends celebrate one of their favorite holidays.

I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 by Lauren Tarshis
Lauren Tarshis returns with her newest I Survived book looking at the Japanese Tsunami that devastated the Japanese coast.

My wish list has already been added to since my last order so I am looking forward to putting in another order very soon.
